Before You Buy A Gun Safe
There are two basic types of gun safes on the market — pistol safes and rifle safes. Once you decide which one you want, you can then choose a particular gun safe for how long it can withstand the heat of a raging fire, which you can find out by asking about the safe’s fire rating.
Most gun safes can handle 90 minutes in a burning room, but new models have a fire rating of two hours, which is sufficient time for most consumers. You could also base your decision on other factors, such as ease of use, size, or the burglary rating of the safe, which is measured by how long it takes a locksmith to open it.
Gun safes can be cabinets or chests, and the one you buy will depend on how many and what type of guns you will be stored in them. Do you need shelves for ammunition or racks for rifles? Will you be storing other things in the safe as well?
There are even very small gun safes for sale that you can keep a handgun in. These safes are small enough to be attached to a bed, or under a desk.
If you want extra protection from burglars, a large cabinet gun safe might be your best bet, since it cannot be carried out of your home as easily as a smaller chest gun safe.
As for locks for your gun safe, there are many kinds to choose from. You can opt to have a key lock, a combination lock, a biometric lock (also called a fingerprint lock), an electronic lock or a 4-way active bolt system.
The fastest lock to open is a biometric lock, which only needs a fingerprint scan to access the contents. It should only take a few seconds to open. Biometric locks are also convenient to use since they can be programmed to store the fingerprints of anyone else you want to have access to your guns in case of emergency.
A 4-way active bolt system provides layers of security; this lock looks and acts like a bank vault locking mechanism.
5 Best Gun Safes Under 500
1. Stack-On SS-10-MG-C 10 Gun, Matte Hunter Green
This is the type of gun safe that is long and slim – not the low, short, and wide. If you have long-barreled guns, this would be the perfect safe to meet your demands and requirements. Unlike other safes that can be quite expensive and costly, this one is the perfect gun safe under 500 bucks that will meet your demands. This convertible gun safe is able to hold 10 firearms with the overall 54 inches of height.
Another thing to like about this safe is the removable shelf, which is super handy to manage your collections. The exterior appearance isn’t very appealing unless you like hunter green hue. And the interior setting is fully carpeted that will provide a plush setting.
What we liked
- The overall design is pretty solid and sturdy
- Having the carpeted setting in the interior side provides a soft and plush cushion-like setting
What we didn’t like
- Be prepared if your safe arrives with not very good alignment for the door and the locks. You can fix it by yourself but it takes some extra work and efforts.
- The total dimension of the safe doesn’t seem to be right or proper because most users claim that the sizes are somewhat odd.

- Easily installed and also programmed – but make sure that you really follow the directions to the letter. It’s the only way you can be sure that the safe will work well
- The performance and quality are just perfect
What we didn’t like
- Sometimes the biometric fingerprint reading doesn’t work. You may want to store several fingerprint recordings so you can still open the safe. If you only keep one or two fingerprint recordings, you may be locked out when the reading doesn’t respond.

This gun safe is different from the other safes because of its horizontal design be best as under bed gun safe today. Unlike other safes with its vertical construction, this one is coming with a horizontal construction which makes it easy to store or slide in any crevice at home. Slide it under the bed? You can do it. Place it on top of the wardrobe? Yes, it is also possible – but make sure that your wardrobe is able to hold off the weight of the safe. After all, a gun safe certainly made of metal, which means that it is pretty heavy.
The cool thing about this under bed gun safe is not only the design but also the features. The interior setting has a sliding tray with quite generous space. The safe is super solid with its locking bar mechanism and 5 point sliding system. Another cool feature is the backlight system so you can still use the safe even in a dimly lit situation or in the dark – which is quite ideal during an emergency situation.
What we liked
- Great quality of the material and also size – everything just comes perfectly within the right measurement
- Operating the safe while managing the setting is super easy and simple. Even if this is your first time, you won’t encounter any problems or difficulties.
What we didn’t like

5. Homak 10-Gun Security Corner Gun Cabinet
Homak comes with different sizes and dimensions – and such a thing affects the price too. For instance, Homak for 8-gun is cheaper than 10-gun. There is also another construction with double door, so you really have a lot of great options.
This Homak 10-gun corner gun safe isn’t only affordable but it can also save up a lot of long gun and ammo (as well as accessories). The safe is claimed to secure all of your collections safely. What we liked
- Perfect to be placed in a corner your home.
- The construction and design are pretty good and solid
- Comes with a nice separation between the ammo (or accessories) and the firearms
What we didn’t like
- The padding inside the safe is thin and the adhesive isn’t too strong. It would be great if the padding can be thicker with stronger adhesive, so it won’t easily come off.
- Some users claim that this item is more like a cabinet instead of a safe
- Not all of the parts are safe and secured
- Basic locking system

Very nicely written article. I just bought Stack-On SS10 that holds like 2-4 long guns and some mags plus some extra storage for other stuff.
Martin says
Stack-On SS10 is perfectly safe for people who don’t own to many guns. Fit for 4 long guns and 4 handguns and has a shelf inside of it in the top portion area. The safe that can also be bolted down to the floor and wall. The electronic combination is excellent for getting in and out of the safe very fast and more effective.

Interesting design for a corner gun cabinet, I’ve never seen one of those before. My latest safe in the corner at an angle, but not made for it like Homak and wasting some space behind it. Nice share.

I’m so excited to mount my new gunsafe vaultek slider series! Maybe under my desk, against the wall, or on the side of night stand.
